Hot House Eggs

An invention of the young Roald Dahl, hot house eggs where one of the first things I learnt to cook without harming myself. Its for those morning when the idea of another cereal and toast makes you want to weep a little, but you can’t muster up the energy or time to produce anything significantly difficult. If you’re looking to shake things up a bit, a hot house egg with a side of bacon is a good way to start.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 2 Slices of Bread
  • 2 Eggs
  • Butter

Get Ready

  • Frying Pan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Cut sizeable holes in the centre of the bread slices then heat a good chunk of butter in the pan.
  2. Add the slices and their cut-outs to the pan and fry on both sides for 2min or until golden brown.
  3. Just before the bread is done on the second side, crack the egg into the hole in the bread. Fry for 2min then flip onto the other side for 1 more minute [or until the egg is cooked to your liking]
  4. Get it on a plate and season the eggy middle with salt and pepper. When you’re done you can mop up whatever is left with the cut-outs and eat those too. Now get on with your goddamn day already.
